Double Chin Treatment
A double chin changes the profile significantly, making the neck look shorter and the jaw line less defined, and affects many people regardless of weight or fitness. Both surgical and non-surgical options are available at our Clifton, Bristol clinic.
A double chin, increased volume and laxity beneath the jaw affect many people regardless of their weight. It can result from genetic fat distribution, natural ageing changes in the neck tissues, or the accumulation of submental fat. It significantly changes the face’s profile, making the neck look shorter and the jaw line less defined.
A feature often overlooked is the enlargement of the submandibular salivary glands that occurs naturally with age in many cases. These add significant fullness to the neck and sit just below the jowls, making the jowls look bigger and appear to extend into the neck. Mr Lee often reduces the size of these, bringing them back to the size they were at about age 30. This can be done under both general and local anaesthesia.

Options we offer
Submental liposuction is a highly effective surgical treatment for removing excess fat from beneath the chin. Performed under local anaesthetic at the clinic in Bristol, it involves a small incision hidden in the natural crease beneath the chin, through which the fat is removed.
Recovery is typically a week to ten days. Where neck laxity, loose or hanging skin, is the primary concern, a neck lift can tighten the platysma muscle and redrape the neck skin. Mr Lee performs this procedure and will advise at consultation on the most appropriate technique for your anatomy.
Frequently Asked Questions — Double Chin
-
Is liposuction for the chin a big procedure?
Submental liposuction is a minor procedure performed under local anaesthetic. It is very well tolerated, and most patients return to work within a week. Mr Lee will explain exactly what to expect at your consultation.
-
What if I have both fat and loose skin under my chin?
In this case, liposuction alone may not be sufficient — the skin needs to be tightened or repositioned. Mr Lee will assess at the consultation and advise whether fat removal alone, or combined fat and skin surgery, will produce the best result.
