Female Hair Loss
Hair thinning in women is more common than is widely acknowledged, and it can be distressing in a way that is genuinely difficult to talk about. Unlike male pattern hair loss, which follows a predictable pattern of recession and crown thinning, female hair loss most commonly presents as a gradual, diffuse thinning across the whole scalp, often most noticeable at the parting and the crown. The hairline is generally preserved.

What Causes Female Hair Loss
Causes are varied. Female androgenetic alopecia, hormonal changes (menopause, post-pregnancy, thyroid dysfunction), nutritional deficiencies, stress and certain medications can all contribute. Understanding the cause is an important first step before beginning treatment, and we will discuss this at your initial consultation at our Clifton, Bristol clinic.
Healthy hair follicles produce 2 or 3 hairs each. What happens when hair thins is that each follicle produces only 1 or 2 hairs, as well as thinner, weaker strands. Treatment focuses on waking these follicles and stimulating them to produce thicker, stronger, and more numerous hair strands.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) hair therapy delivers injections of your own growth-factor-rich plasma into the scalp to stimulate follicle activity, improve blood supply and support thicker, healthier hair growth. Well-established and evidence-supported for female hair thinning. An initial course of three sessions is recommended, with maintenance every 6–12 months.
Exosomes are combined with micro-needling, which helps drive these cellular messengers deep into the scalp, directly stimulating the hair follicles.
Frequently Asked Questions, Female Hair Loss
-
Should I investigate the cause of my hair loss before starting treatment?
Yes, particularly if hair loss is sudden, recent or associated with other symptoms such as fatigue, weight change or skin changes. We will take a thorough history at consultation and may recommend blood tests to exclude thyroid or hormonal causes before beginning treatment.
-
How long before I see results?
PRP and polynucleotide treatments work gradually over 3–6 months. The first noticeable improvement is often a reduction in shedding, followed by finer new hairs, and then a gradual increase in overall density. Patience and commitment to the course matter.
-
Are there any side effects?
Both treatments are very well tolerated. Some mild tenderness of the scalp for 24–48 hours after treatment is normal. There is no risk of allergic reaction with PRP as it uses your own blood.
