Collagen-Stimulating Injectables
Sculptra® and Radiesse® are collagen-stimulating injectable treatments used to restore lost facial volume and improve structural support. Available at our Bristol clinic.
Restoring what age takes away
Facial ageing is not just about wrinkles. Over time, the deeper tissues of the face lose volume and support. Fat compartments shrink. Connective tissue weakens. The facial skeleton changes shape.
These structural shifts cause hollowing, sagging, and loss of definition. The face can start to look tired even when you are not.
Collagen-stimulating injectables are designed to address these deeper changes.
How they work
Sculptra® and Radiesse® are not traditional fillers. They do not simply add volume to a space. Instead, they stimulate the body to produce new collagen within the subcutaneous tissues and deeper facial layers.
Over time, this new collagen restores volume, improves facial contours, and provides additional structural support.
Results develop gradually. This is intentional. The improvement looks natural because it is.
Sculptra®
Sculptra® contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible material with a long history of medical use.
After injection, it gradually stimulates collagen production over several months. The treatment itself adds little long-term volume. The result comes from your body’s own response.
Sculptra® is particularly useful for:
- Generalised facial volume loss
- Hollow cheeks and temples
- Loss of facial shape and contour
- Age-related thinning of facial tissues
- Full-face rejuvenation
A course of treatments is usually recommended. Results continue to develop after each session.
Radiesse®
Radiesse® contains calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a gel carrier.
The gel provides an immediate volumising effect. The microspheres stimulate collagen production over the following months. As the carrier gel is gradually absorbed, the newly generated tissue volume remains.
Radiesse® is commonly used for:
- Cheek enhancement
- Jawline definition
- Chin augmentation
- Lower face support
- Hand rejuvenation
It can also be used in a diluted, “hyperdilute” form to improve tissue quality and support across larger areas of the face or body.
Sculptra® or Radiesse® — which is right for you?
Both treatments stimulate collagen and can produce excellent results. They work in different ways and suit different treatment goals.
| Sculptra® | Radiesse® | |
| Active ingredient | Poly-L-lactic acid | Calcium hydroxylapatite |
| Initial effect | Gradual | Immediate volume + collagen stimulation |
| Best suited to | Broad facial volume restoration | Targeted contouring and structural enhancement |
| Sessions required | Usually a course | Often fewer sessions |
Neither is inherently better. The right choice depends on your anatomy, your pattern of ageing, and what you are trying to achieve. Mr Simon Lee will discuss this with you during your consultation.
How do these compare with hyaluronic acid fillers?
Hyaluronic acid fillers add volume directly. The effect is immediate and precise.
Collagen stimulators work differently. They encourage your body to generate its own volume over time.
Many patients benefit from both. Hyaluronic acid fillers can provide precise contouring and immediate correction. Collagen stimulators can address more diffuse volume loss and rebuild overall facial support.
At our Bristol clinic, Mr Simon Lee will advise on the most appropriate combination for your individual needs.
Can collagen stimulators tighten loose skin?
This is a common question.
Sculptra® and Radiesse® restore volume and improve structural support beneath the skin. They do not directly tighten skin. They cannot reposition descended tissues or remove excess skin.
Restoring lost volume can reduce hollowing and soften some signs of ageing. For patients with significant skin laxity or sagging, the improvement will be meaningful but not the same as surgery.
If surgical facial rejuvenation is likely to be the more appropriate option, Mr Simon Lee will tell you honestly during your consultation.
Who is a good candidate?
Collagen-stimulating injectables are particularly suited to patients who:
- Have early to moderate facial volume loss
- Want gradual, natural-looking improvement
- Wish to avoid an overfilled appearance
- Are looking to maintain facial structure over time
- Are not yet ready for, or do not want, surgery
They are not a substitute for surgical facial rejuvenation. They cannot replicate the lifting, repositioning, or skin-tightening achieved by a facelift or neck lift. But for the right patient, they can make a significant and lasting difference.
Your consultation at Simon Lee Clinic, Bristol
A collagen-stimulating injectable treatment starts with a detailed assessment.
Your treating clinician will consider not only your skin but the deeper structural changes contributing to how your face has aged. The most appropriate approach — whether Sculptra®, Radiesse®, hyaluronic acid fillers, energy-based treatments, surgery, or a combination — will be discussed with you in full.
The goal is always natural-looking rejuvenation that works with your anatomy and preserves what makes you look like you.

FAQ
-
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on the degree of volume loss and which product is used. Sculptra® typically requires a course of two to three treatments. Radiesse® may achieve good results in fewer sessions. Mr Simon Lee will give you a clear recommendation after your assessment.
-
When will I see results?
With Sculptra®, results develop gradually over three to six months. With Radiesse®, there is an immediate volumising effect followed by ongoing collagen stimulation. Both continue to improve after your final treatment session.
-
How long do results last?
Results vary between patients. Sculptra® results can last two years or more. Radiesse® typically lasts twelve to eighteen months. Individual factors such as age, tissue quality, and lifestyle all play a role.
-
Is there any downtime?
Most patients experience mild swelling or bruising around the injection sites. This usually settles within a few days. You can return to normal activities shortly after treatment.
-
Can these be combined with other treatments?
Yes. Collagen stimulators are often used alongside hyaluronic acid fillers, skin boosters, or energy-based treatments as part of a planned rejuvenation programme. Mr Simon Lee will advise on the most appropriate approach for your goals.
-
Are these treatments safe?
Both Sculptra® and Radiesse® have established safety records and are widely used in medical aesthetic practice. As with all injectable treatments, they should be administered by a clinician with appropriate training and experience. At Simon Lee Clinic, all injectable treatments are carried out under consultant plastic surgeon supervision.
