Aftercare following cosmetic injectables is essential for ensuring optimal results and minimising potential side effects. As part of your initial assessment, you will be asked to complete a health and lifestyle questionnaire, in part to help us recommend a safe treatment for you, but also so we can personalise your aftercare advice.
Here’s a general guide to common aftercare advice, what you should do post-treatment and why.
For the first 12 hours
To avoid infection
- Don’t apply make-up until the next day
- Keep your hands clean
- Avoid touching the area
- Use Clean pillowcases for that night
- No cuddles or kisses from your pets by your face
- No cycle helmets or riding hats
- If you usually use a non-disposable face flannel, just use your clean hands that evening after the treatment.
For the first 12-48 hours, or until any redness or tenderness has settled
To minimise tenderness:
- Avoid vigorous exercise
- No extremes of hot or cold
- No sunbathing
To help with any swelling:
Apply a cold compress or ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the treated area to minimize swelling and reduce bruising. Limit this to 10-15 minutes at a time for the first few hours after the injection.
To minimise bruising:
- Avoid Alcohol and some over the counter medicines
- For 24 hours post-treatment, avoid consuming alcohol or using over the counter medications like aspirin and ibuprofen as these can increase the risk of bruising because they slow down blood clotting.
Follow Specific Advice
Listen to your healthcare provider’s specific aftercare instructions, which may vary depending on the type of injectable used (like Botulinum Toxin, fillers, etc.) and your individual needs.
Watch for Side Effects
You will be advised about side effects which are to be expected and also we tell you about symptoms we would like you to report without delay. If you experience significant discomfort or any concerning symptoms, don’t hesitate to contact your practitioner. We are here to support you through your recovery.
Be Patient
Results may take a few days to fully manifest, especially with fillers. Swelling can also change the appearance of the area temporarily. Give your body time to adjust.
Moisturise and Protect
If instructed, use gentle skin care products. Sunscreen is always a must to protect your skin from UV exposure, especially after procedures.
Following these aftercare tips can help ensure a smooth recovery and enhance the results of your cosmetic injectables. Do not hesitate to discuss any particular concerns with your practitioner.
